What is civil forfeiture?
Forfeiture is a complex area of the law, in which the government contends that private property was acquired with the proceeds of a crime. Even if the current property owner is not accused of participating in the crime, the property can be seized and liquidated to compensate the government and the victims of the crime. Once your property has been seized, it is up to the property owner to prove that the property was acquired legitimately. If you do not respond promptly to the notice of forfeiture, title to the property passes to the government. It is critical to have an attorney versed in this area of the law on your side early in the proceedings. If you know you are the subject of a seizure investigation, it is in your best interest to contact Katherine Langley as soon as possible.
